Bath Abbey history The first church to be built on the site of Bath Abbey was a 7th century Anglo-Saxon convent, followed by a monastery renown for its beautiful architecture. After the Norman invasion however, this was torn down in 1090 and replaced by a grand Norman cathedral, with the Bishopric of Bath soon established.
