Bell Ringing Bells have been rung at the Abbey for hundreds of years, since before the 16 th century, and we are proud to carry on this tradition today. We are very fond of our bells, of which there are ten in total, and these continue to be rung regularly for services, weddings, and other momentous occasions, often celebratory, as well as sometimes sad. (w/c7th April) It's the work of a partnership called Liminal involving architect Frances Crow and sound artist and composer David Prior. Answer 1 of 4: One of the highlights of my recent trip to England was observing bell ringing at Bath Abbey. I was there August 31 to September 2 and at one point just happened to notice a small sign on a back door of the Abbey that said something like: Bell.
During Liminal's project Of This Parish, David Prior and I set up some filming equipment in the bell chamber while ringing practice was taking place at Bath Abbey. The bells are muted, so we were able to hear the sounds which are masked during full ringing. It was amazing and slightly scary to see tonnes of metal swinging around like this up close! Wow! The Bell ringers at Bath Abbey can disengage the the bell clappers so that they can practice without the bells being heard outside.

They still swing as usual though. The abbey's tower is now home to a ring of ten bells, which are hung unconventionally such that the order of the bells from highest to lowest runs anti-clockwise around the ringing chamber, rather than in the usual clockwise fashion.
