Bell Ringing Bells have been rung at the Abbey for hundreds of years, since before the 16 th century, and we are proud to carry on this tradition today. We are very fond of our bells, of which there are ten in total, and these continue to be rung regularly for services, weddings, and other momentous occasions, often celebratory, as well as sometimes sad. The bells of historic Bath Abbey feature in an unusual sound installation currently on display at the American Museum on Claverton Down this week. (w/c7th April) It's the work of a partnership called Liminal involving architect Frances Crow and sound artist and composer David Prior. The Abbey's tenor bell weighs 33 cwt, about the same as a small car! It is inscribed: 'All of you Bathe that hear me sound Thank Lady Hopton's hundred pound'.

One of the highlights of my recent trip to England was observing bell ringing at Bath Abbey. I was there August 31 to September 2 and at one point just happened to notice a small sign on a back door of the Abbey that said something like: Bell Ringing Sunday 10 am. I walked over to the Abbey shortly before ten and met one of the bell ringers outside who told me they ring the bells between.
The city of Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means that it has certain protective laws. One of these is that nobody is allowed to build higher than the top of Bath Abbey! So, the top of the Abbey's tower is the highest point in Bath city centre. You can take a Tower Tour to reach the top (and learn about the bells and other building secrets on the way!), which is 212 steps each.

Bath Abbey's Discovery Centre is located beneath the Abbey shop and features artefacts and exhibits about the Abbey's development and history. Displays included the history of the building of the Abbey, monastic life, and the Abbey's impact on the community, the architecture and sculptures of the buildings, and the role of the Abbey in present.
